It did, however, try pretty hard with its plot of an ancient Predator pyramid being discovered under the ice on Antarctica, and featured longtime Alien star Lance Henriksen. It’s kind of like the film sought to combine Alien and Predator without truly understanding the tonal choices that made either of them special. Cut out the cards below, flip them over, and play a fun memory matching game. It’s a schlocky action movie with the barest hint of horror, helmed by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Predator is the only movie in either franchise to receive a PG-13 rating, and it shows. In the early 2000’s, 20th Century Fox got it into its head to take the Alien and Predator franchises, both of which had been dormant for a number of years, and mash them together in hopes of capitalizing on that fan interest while simultaneously revitalizing both series. If the prey cannot be caught easily, make the circle smaller. Select predators and prey that have a natural relationship, such a fish/minnow, wolf/deer or owl/mouse. But once I learned the games systems a bit better (e.g., I wasn't using magic enough previously because I was little hazy on what the cost of using it actually was), I started tearing through it. It seemed tuned pretty hard at first, especially the final boss, which took me at least two dozen tries to beat. It's an interesting idea, though I think it could stand to be even more visible on-screen, since it's crucial to know where your spirit is at, but is hard to keep track of sometimes in the middle of the frenetic action.īut I think the most surprising thing to me was how much better I got at the game as I played it. Also like Sekiro, it ditches the concept of stamina completely in favor of a "spirit gauge," which depletes as you dodge, block, get hit, or use magic, and recovers or gains as you strike enemies or counter. It's a littler slower and less button-mashy than Nioh, with more emphasis placed on countering, not unlike Sekiro. The core combat, however, feels pretty good. For me this meant that dodging always felt a little desperate with me quickly mashing the button to make it go, and I'd often end up doing it more times that I wanted having it on a dedicated button and only needing a single press would go a long way toward helping me be more deliberate and precise with dodging. I'm also not a big fan of the counter and dodge being mapped to the same button-one press does a counter, a second does a dodge. There were times where I went to attack or drink a healing potion only to have nothing at all happen. There are definitely some kinks to iron out. ![]() So I downloaded it on PS5 and gave it a spin. But I'm a big Nioh fan, and the idea of a Nioh-adjacent Team Ninja game that also had producer Masaaki Yamagiwa of Bloodborne fame working on it certainly sparked my interest. Saw the game being played on UPF, hadn't really been aware of it before then. This is because my cursor disappeared more than half the time, forcing me to exit the menu and click back in just to check out the skill tree.I was tepid on it for a while, but after a little more play I'm feeling pretty good about it. As well, it was difficult navigating the Wizardry menu to give my character new spells. Even at its fastest setting, the camera feels sluggish when turning. Unfortunately, the team likely did not expect anyone to actually use a mouse and keyboard. This is a configuration that Koei Tecmo supports. Due to certain circumstances, I played with a mouse and a keyboard. There are also some oddities in the patch I played when it came to the menu. It would be a minor nuisance except for the fact that every frame is literally what separates my character from a successful deflect or a world of hurt. Wo Long occasionally stutters, making my frame rate terrible despite my gaming laptop’s fairly good specs. ![]() Conversely, players who prefer a challenge can let simply maintain the bare minimum of Morale before a boss fight. So players who want an easier time can grind to boost their Morale and make each strike count. Fortitude, on the other hand, is the minimum level of Morale you have. The closer your Morale is to boss’s, the more damage you deal and the less damage you take. As well, your Fortitude rises every time you raise a battle flag. The more enemies you defeat, the higher your Morale is. However, the Morale and Fortitude systems can make your life easier. Now, obviously, you do need some skill in order to fight the bosses. Surprisingly, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is really approachable. The story is not very impressive and ultimately forgettable, but the action and cutscenes are a delight to watch. ![]() You fight through levels with historical figures such as Zhao Yun or Guan Yu as your partners, all while wielding magical powers and Divine Beasts in a fantasy version of China. However, this time they’re after an elixir of immortality, rather than territory. The nameless player avatar (whom the player can customize) finds themself swept into a conflict between the various kingdoms. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, like most other Dynasty Warriors games, takes place during the Yellow Turban Rebellion during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Unfortunately, part of the challenge involves dealing with things beyond the player’s control when on PC, such as laggy framerates and shoddy controls depending on how you’re playing. While it is definitely more action-oriented than other Soulslike games, it is still quite the challenge. But Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, despite its differing playstyle, does not let its predecessors overshadow it. When one thinks of the Three Kingdoms era of China and Koei Tecmo, their first thought might be the fast-paced hack-n-slash action of the Dynasty Warriors series. Dumile completed the album alone over the course of several months, and it was announced with a release date of May 3, 1994. On April 23, 1993, just before the release of the second KMD album, Black Bastards, Subroc was struck by a car and killed while crossing the Long Island Expressway. This level of class depth goes above and beyond anything I’ve seen in any ARPG aside from Path of Exile or perhaps Lost Ark, though it’s still rare to see items that are individually powerful enough to completely change the way you play at early levels. ![]() Fortunately, there’s little penalty for experimenting with different approaches to your class, aside from a few gold coins if you choose to refund your skill points at higher levels. Each of the four Druid totems is themed differently as well, and I found that I could shift my Spirit Boons to accommodate very different styles of play. For instance, the Druid unlocks its Spirit Boons by completing an entire side-quest chain and establishing a foothold for Druids in Scosglen, and once I did this, I was able to allot a specialized resource to help make myself far more powerful in specific ways than I would’ve been had I chosen to skip that quest altogether. ![]() Mixing these abilities together, a lucky roll of the dice meant cataclysmic destruction for my foes when a minor earthquake accompanied the rather unpleasant weather I’d cast upon them.Ĭlass progression is augmented by all sorts of useful boosts each class kit comes with a tertiary progression system in addition to skills and equipment - and the way these systems work varies wildly from class to class. I combined this with one of the Druid’s four Ultimate abilities specifically, the one which summons an entire lightning storm replete with tornadoes. I gave my Druid a Key Passive ability that made his Storm spells intermediately trigger equivalent spells of the opposite element in practice, this meant each lightning bolt he slung would also have the chance to spawn fissures erupting from under the recipient’s feet, dealing twice as much damage. ![]() Classes are broken down thoroughly enough to grant a ton of space to experiment with different skills and passive stat boosts that often incentivize specific styles of play, and this is far more evident at higher levels –- when you’ve earned your Ultimate and Key Passive abilities, which are total game-changers and could even be said to change the way a given character functions at a core level. Class customization is leaps ahead of Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo 3, especially at later levels, and this is due to an extensive class-based skill tree that’s more thorough and forgiving than that of Diablo 4’s predecessors. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Diablo game without deep character classes that offer plenty of space for customizing your own playstyle once the fighting starts. Let’s be clear: This is the darkest Diablo has ever been, and thematically speaking, blows Diablo 2’s brooding Gothic atmosphere out of the water. One takes place in the unmistakably Celtic-inspired woodland region of Scosglen, and the shock factor elicited by its body horror is deftly woven into the broader plot in a way that is signature to the series. One of the earliest pieces of evidence of its masterful cohesion between action, worldbuilding, and storytelling was a side-quest in the starting zone that had me exploring a frozen clearing for a villager’s husband, only to find him bound and flayed alive, begging for more devastation –- a clear nod to Hellraiser.Īll five of Diablo 4’s zones are chock full of moments like that. Moreover, the graphical fidelity, music, and sound design are all top-tier, which is surprising given its frustrating always-online nature. ![]() The big villains are ambiguous in their motives but decidedly evil in their methods, and they’re played brilliantly throughout the campaign.
